My preoccupation with the perfect space between two beautifully constructed letters is thrilling, almost like pursuing the universal truth. It must be the left-handedness in me, causing compulsive obession to run through my brain and my pen.
I like to develop my own modern styles inspired by everything from vintage perfume bottles and turn-of-the century calling cards to old French schoolbook labels.
My work is done with a pointed pen and gouaches and inks. I have a large collection of nibs from around the world and love experimenting with new nibs and their response to the tooth of different papers.
I enjoy hand lettering custom wedding invitations and envelopes for brides-to-be and I offer custom colors to match any invitation or special project color.
One of my greatest joys has been studying with the world’s master penmen including White House calligraphers Pat Blair and Rick Muffler, a fellow left hander.
As a wedding invitation designer for Bella Figura, I incorporate calligraphy into many of my wedding invitation designs and my calligraphy style “Bescal” was made into a font by renowned type foundry P22 for Smock Paper in late 2009.
You can see my calligraphy at my blog at designsgirl.typepad.com. I update my blog twice weekly so please visit regularly.
